Former crew member Benji Nel shared his “horrible” experience living and working on a £56million superyacht.
Benji explained it was probably the best experience of his life “but also the worst time I’ve ever had”.
“I got to travel to so many different countries, I got to see the world from another perspective. We got to sail from Italy all the way to Albania, Greece and all the islands, which was amazing. It was so beautiful seeing all of these countries.
“I also met really cool and high up people and got some really good food as we had a personal chef on board.”
He explained that having a personal chef was “amazing” and probably the best thing.
“We had so many different types of meals from all around the world which was so awesome,” Benji said.
However, he had to quit his luxurious job as he found it “just horrible”.
“The bad thing is that we had to wake up super early.
“Waking up at 6am and working until midnight and sometimes we would have to wake up at 3am or 4am if the boat had moved because the anchor would have moved. So we would have to get up, get on the small little boat next to the big boat, and go on these three meters waves in the pitch black.
“The only thing we could see was the big boat. It was just crazy.”
He continued: “As my job, which was the deckhand, I had to clean the boat.
“So I had to wake up at 6am, and start cleaning, rub the boat from top to bottom, and I was the only one cleaning it.
“It was this big 56 meter boat that I had to make look sparkling, there couldn’t be one drop of any dirt. There was also wood so I had to scrub the wood every morning.
“Sometimes at like 8am I’d had finished cleaning most of the boat and it would rain and it would ruin all of that progress.
“Generally we would have to clean it before the owners woke up which was around 9am and if it rained at 8am I would have to start cleaning it again before they woke up which was just horrible.”
“It was not for me,” he said.
“The captain wasn’t the best person either. He wasn’t helpful in any way. It was actually my first time working on a boat and he just expected me to know everything. It wasn’t the most enjoyable thing.
“The hierarchy systems was crazy too. Living together and staying in the same room. I used to stay in the same room as the chef,” Benji explained.
“I was also really seasick when I was on the boat. So I didn’t enjoy it that much. I think I’m more a land person.
“Sometimes I just didn’t enjoy being in the ocean. It was very beautiful but being there is just not for me.
“I prefer being on land, being able to go see my friends and family. The worst was definitely the work I had to do and realising I wasn’t a person to be in the ocean. But I only realised I wasn’t a boat person when I got on the boat,” he admitted.
