A Canadian couple got married on the border between the U.S. and Canada earlier this month so, despite current travel restrictions, guests of both nationalities could attend.
Lindsay Clowes and Alex Leckie got engaged in November 2019 and planned to marry in August 2020. But as the coronavirus pandemic continued, it became clear that they would not be able to follow their original plans. They canceled the date and pushed back their wedding until 2021.
As the planned date of the original wedding came and went, the couple decided they didn’t want to wait another year to get married.
"I had this idea in the back of my head I always called Plan B to get married on the river so family can join us by boat and the other side of the river," Clowes told CNN on Monday. "I called my parents and I said, 'I have this idea, what do you think?' And they loved it and really helped us bring that vision to life so we were able to plan it and have the wedding within six weeks."
The couple was married on Oct. 10 at St. Stephen Wharf in New Brunswick, Canada. Across the St. Croix River in Calais, Maine, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends watched the wedding. Grandparents floated in a boat in the middle of the river and watched the ceremony from a safe distance.
Due to coronavirus restrictions, the wharf was set up for social distancing. Only 50 people were allowed on the Canadian side and 15 on the U.S. side.
Since the start of the pandemic, engaged couples have had creative responses to love in the time of corona. One New York City couple was married on the street, with a friend officiating the ceremony from his fourth-story window. Others have held virtual weddings, with friends and family dialing in. Others still have decided to forego elaborate ceremonies and simply elope in nature.
