Disney's Splash Mountain to be renamed Tiana's Bayou Adventure: Travel Weekly

Disney’s Splash Mountain will become Tiana’s Bayou Adventure after the attraction is rethemed. The attraction is scheduled to open in the Florida and California parks in late 2024.

The name was unveiled last week during Essence Fest in New Orleans.

The attraction’s retheme is based on the 2009 animated film “The Princess and the Frog,” which follows Princess Tiana on her journey to open a restaurant in New Orleans in the 1920s.

Disney said its Imagineers have been Big Easy regulars lately, traveling to the city to get inspiration for the attraction and consult with chefs, academics and musicians.

“In many ways, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is a love letter to New Orleans,” said Imagineer Charita Carter, executive producer of relevancy activations. “Like the musical city that inspired this attraction, Tiana’s second act is about a community working in harmony to achieve something extraordinary. She reminds us of an immutable truth we can all relate to: ‘If you do your best each and every day, good things are sure to come your way.’ And that’s a melody we can all sing along to!”

Disney announced it would retheme Splash Mountain in 2020. It’s part of a larger diversity and inclusion initiative throughout the Walt Disney Company. Splash Mountain, which opened in Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom in 1992, is based on the 1946 film “Song of the South,” viewed by critics as racist and offensive for its portrayal of Black people.
